The program has a number of components including:
- Screening for trachoma in children.
- Screening for trichiasis in adults.
- Coordinating and assisting with opthalmologist and optometrist visits including prioritising diabetic patients.
- Using a retinal camera to take images of patient's that are reported on externally by an ophthalmologist.
- Conducting education and health promotion including school based education.
The ophthalmologist and optometrist visits are supported by the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia.
Nganampa Health Council also operates an Ear Health program.
Through funding provided by the Rural Doctor’s Workforce Agency, Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons make visits to the APY Lands and screen children for ear disease. Selected patients may then be referred to Adelaide for surgery.
The program also provides support to audiology visits that are conducted by Australian Hearing. These visits also have a strong focus on children although adults with hearing issues are also seen.
